At the sushi restaurant I have been going to for 38 years, I noticed that my two favorite fish, sardines and bonito, were beautifully displayed. Right next to them were “Kuruma Ebi” prawns.
2 years earlier, the representative of the tourism ambassadors for Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, told me that a major company had a family event and, "they wanted us to serve local ingredients from Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture."
Several menu ideas, including ramen and kawara soba, had initially been proposed.
However, due to a lack of time and staff, it was decided that they could only offer one item. In the end, the choice fell on Kuruma Ebi prawns as the local specialty.
The Ube City Tourism Ambassador knew that I had previously worked with the president of a company in Yamaguchi Prefecture, so perhaps they thought my presence would be reassuring.
I could have declined, but I had been greatly indebted to that company in the past, so I gladly accepted the request to help as a Tourism Ambassador.
The event involved young children catching several Kuruma Ebi prawns from a tub of water and bringing them over to us.
Our job was to grill the prawns on a hot plate.
We placed paper plates and lemon slices around the griddle and handed the freshly grilled prawns to the children.
It was incredibly busy!
The event opened at 10AM and by shortly after 2PM all 720 prawns had been sold!
In fact, the work was far more physically demanding than anything I normally do at Enoki...LOL
After we finished cleaning up, I was finally able to take a moment to relax.
Then, quite by chance, I had an unexpected reunion with the CEO, the representative of the company, whom I had not seen for 43 years!
He asked me, “What brings you here?”
I replied, “I’m here to help with Ube City’s tourism promotion.”
For a brief moment, it felt as though I had been transported back to my 20s.
After we exchanged a few words, I took a tour around the company premises before heading back to Shibuya.
Being a Ube City Tourism Ambassador is no easy job from planning events, developing local products, providing tourism information, and introducing local specialties, to setting up and cleaning up after events from early in the morning.
You’ve really done a great job.
