In 1996, I took my first trip overseas.
While I was away, the customers and staff kindly helped take care of my Enoki.
After I returned to Japan, the door of Enoki opened sometime after 5pm.
A gentleman walked in and said to me in a Kansai accent,
“Hey! Who are you?”
I replied, “I’m the owner of this restaurant.”
He then said,
“Oh, really? I came to see the young lady, but she isn’t here?”
It was such a rude thing to say that, right then and there, I thought to myself, “This old man is going to be banned from this place next time.”
And yet, despite that first impression, he has continued to come to Enoki for the past 30 years.
He turned 89 this year.
During his working days, he once drank too much and slipped on the stairs, injuring his nose.
Another time, in front of his home, he slipped while getting out of a taxi and ended up with bruises on his forehead and cheek.
Now that he has retired, he gets together with his friends for a meal once every two or three months.
And when that isn’t enough drinking for him, he comes to Enoki and downs about six glasses of imo(Sweet potato) shochu on the rocks.
One day, he told me, “Mama, I went to the hospital recently. I told the doctor that my lower back is a little weak and asked if there was anything that could be done.”
Then, during the doctor’s questions, the doctor asked him,
“Mr. N, how many years did you work?”
He answered, “Until I was 80.”
The doctor apparently told him, “Your brain is remarkably sharp!”
Always full of positive energy and a strong will to live, this man seems like someone who could easily live to be 100.
Even after Mama told him he was banned from the restaurant, Mr. N never let it get him down.
He kept coming back to Enoki.
Please stay healthy and energetic for many more years to come.
